Working with children on a regular basis has taught me something very important about our society. As adults, we sometimes forget the basics. Children ask, "Why can't my parent's ever see my side?" And my only response- sometimes we forget to try. So, for all of you adults out there, here is one, very simple communication techniques that you may be overlooking: Talk about everyday stuff — and do it every day.
The more you do something, the easier it gets. Talking to the people in your life about everyday stuff builds a bond that can smooth the way for when you need to discuss something more serious.
Find something trivial to chat about each day. Talk about the Dodger game. Share something one of your coworkers said. Even small talk about what's for dinner can keep your relationship strong and comfortable.
It's never too late to start. If you feel your relationship with your friends, children, or spouse is strained, try easing into conversations. Mention that cute thing the dog did. Talk about how well your son is doing in math. Chatting every day not only keeps an existing relationship strong, it also can help a frayed relationship get stronger.
When people feel connected to your daily life, they can be there for you if something really important comes up.
