In these stressful times, it's easy to catastrophize. "What if I lose my job?" or "This could be the next Great Depression!" But there's reassuring news. The stuff we believe will make us miserable won't leave us feeling nearly as unhappy as we predict.
The key factors to life satisfaction have little to do with money and everything to do with your relationships, following your passions and having a purpose. Try this exercise to feel instantly calmer about the future.
1.) Write down the top five things that make you happy, whether it's spending time with friends, being out in nature or trying a new activity.
example:
Talking with my old roommate COST $ 0
______________________ COST $ ___
______________________ COST $ ___
______________________ COST $ ___
______________________ COST $ ___
2.) Then estimate how much each costs. You'll probably find most of the things that make you grin have nothing to do with your 401(k).
