Promoting Healthy Body Image in Kids

At a time in their lives when they should feel secure in their body’s growth, developing confidence is a vital and necessary factor in development. It is important to encourage your children’s development of healthy self-esteem and can be begin with the implementation of several basic steps.

Accept and understand that your child is concerned about looks.

Compliment your child on their strengths and important qualities. Frequently use simple statements surrounding physical attributes including quickness, speed, agility, etc.

Compliment your child on non-physical strengths and important qualities including generosity and intelligence.

Encourage your child to express themselves. Identifying emotions and feelings will promote communication and will advance their abilities to describe inner emotions surrounding self-esteem and self-confidence.

Be a role model. Instead of complaining about your looks, explore your strengths and encourage your children to do the same.

In some cases, a teen may need the help of a mental health professional to build healthy, positive self-esteem. If you’re concerned about your son or daughter’s self-esteem, talk to a therapist with training in adolescent mental health issues
